A MAIN road in Herefordshire is being closed overnight for two days this week and drivers will face a diversion that will add 40 minutes to their trip.

The A40 near Ross-on-Wye is being closed by National Highways from 9pm to 6am on Monday, September 23 to Wednesday, September 25.

The road will be closed from the Wilton roundabout to Dixton for resurfacing work.

The dual carriageway will be closed westbound, meaning those travelling from Ross-on-Wye to Monmouth will be affected.

But the official diversion from National Highways is over 28 miles and takes almost an hour, according to Google Maps. It takes drivers from Ross-on-Wye down the A40 to Huntley, near Gloucester, before travelling through the Forest of Dean to Monmouth.

The trip from Ross-on-Wye to Monmouth is less than 10 miles and usually takes around 15 minutes.

The official diversion only uses A-roads, but some people living locally could travel straight through the Forest of Dean on smaller roads to avoid the closure.

National Highways has said: "We apologise for the short notice and any inconvenience this may cause.

"Emergency service vehicles will have access throughout and access to frontages will be maintained using escort vehicles.

"We'll make every effort to ensure the impact on the local community and travelling public is kept to a minimum. We aim to work to the programme, however unforeseen circumstances or weather conditions may mean changes."
