THE date Hereford's new temporary library will open has been confirmed in Herefordshire Council's latest Tetris-like move of services and buildings.

The library has been a hot topic in Hereford in recent years, with suggestions for its permanent new home including the Maylord Orchard shopping centre in the city centre.

The library has been forced to move by works being carried out at its former home in Broad Street.

The building near Hereford Cathedral, which has long housed a small museum upstairs, is being converted to provide the city with a state-of-the-art museum and exhibition space.

Herefordshire Council has since confirmed that the library will be moving permanently to the Shirehall, which is undergoing a major renovation.

The Shirehall, which was home to Hereford's Crown Court, has suffered damage in recent years, with the ceiling in one of the courtrooms collapsing in 2020.

Jury trials have been held out-of-county at Worcester Crown Court since then.

Hereford's library is currently housed at the Museum Resource and Learning Centre in Hereford's Friar Street, but Herefordshire Libraries has now confirmed that the library will close on October 12.

It will reopen in Hereford Town Hall, its latest temporary home, on October 22, and will be open from 9.20am to 5pm Tuesday to Friday and from 9.30am to 4pm on Saturdays.

The library's move to the Town Hall has also meant that the city's register office has had to move from the building to a new office next door at 8 St Owen Street.

A Herefordshire Council spokesperson previously said that marriage and civil partnership ceremonies scheduled at the register office would be moved to the new register office.

Marriages, civil partnership or citizenship ceremonies scheduled in the Oak Room at Hereford Town Hall, are unaffected and will take place in the Oak Room as planned.
