I HAVE been a licensee for 45 years. Let the landlord be responsible if he so chooses, to ban smoking in their garden (Smoking ban: Pub landlords’ dire warning, September 12).
A regulation will destroy the future of Britain’s greatest institution, the British pub.

Landlords clean up cigarette butts from their gardens daily. It will encourage customers to smoke on the street, resulting in cigarette butts on the streets, perhaps cleaned up once a month, so more litter.

CCTV cameras have shown intoxicated smokers jeering at drivers as they go by. This has resulted in drivers stopping and altercations have started. More police time wasting and even resulting in an ambulance being called.
A third of pub customers smoke. I have an 85-year-old customer who has been staying annually for last 37 years. He likes to go outside and smoke between courses. He will not come back and interestingly, he is a retired GP.
