We've selected some of the most shocking cases we have reported on throughout September.

Here are those cases, and the sentences they resulted in.

Paedophile jailed for over nine years

Carl HigginsCarl Higgins (Image: West Mercia Police) A Herefordshire paedophile has been jailed for historical child sexual abuse.

Carl Higgins aged 30 of Widemarsh Street in Hereford was sentenced at Worcester Crown Court after he was found guilty of rape of a child, three sexual assaults and causing a child to engage in sexual activity. The offences took place between 2014 and 2017.

Higgins was sentenced to nine and a half years for the offences, and in addition to his custodial sentence, he has also been issued an indefinite sexual harm prevention order and an indefinite restraining order.

Men jailed for county lines operation

Harnaik Mahli and Keller PreeceHarnaik Mahli and Keller Preece (Image: West Mercia Police) Two county lines drug dealers who trafficked drugs in Herefordshire have been sentenced to a total of ten years.

Harnaik Mahli, 44, of Worlds End Lane, Quinton, Birmingham, and Keller Preece, 27, of Kingsway, Hereford, were found guilty of the offences at Worcester Crown Court.

It was heard that Mahli and Preece were running a well-established county line.

Attacker avoids jail after 'serious and prolonged' assault

An attacker who was found guilty of a “prolonged” assault has avoided jail.

Mark Caley, 58, attacked a man and caused him actual bodily harm in an incident in Hereford.

Caley, of Riddings Meadow, Ludlow, was found guilty of one count of assaulting a person thereby occasioning them actual bodily harm, and was handed a 26-week prison sentence suspended for 12 months.

Teen avoids being locked up after attacking police

AN ATTACKER who targeted police has avoided being locked up after committing an offence while subject to a community order.

Diago Biddle entered a guilty plea to one count of failing to comply with the requirements of a community order when he appeared before magistrates in Hereford earlier this month.

The community order was made by Worcester Magistrates’ Court on April 20 after Biddle attacked one police officer by beating, damaged her glasses, and harassed another officer.

Magistrates chose to revoke the community order and re-sentence Biddle for the offence, handing him a 20-week term in detention suspended for 12 months.

A Hereford man was caught in possession of class A drugs with intent to sell them, a court has heard.

Matthew Hayward entered a guilty plea when he appeared before magistrates in Hereford.

The court heard the 36-year-old had been caught in possession of a quantity of cocaine with the intention of supplying it in Hereford on September 19. He was caught out while driving his Mercedes in Wallis Avenue.
