We've compiled a list of the top four independent hotels in Herefordshire, according to Tripadvisor.
Glewstone Court
This historic hotel near Ross on Wye boasts a five-star rating on TripAdvisor, based on 911 reviews. The manor house dates back to 1709 with original Georgian and Regency features and has a restaurant which holds two AA rosettes.
One reviewer said: "One of the best wedding venues l have ever stayed at. Staff were amazing and the surroundings exceptional.
The interior is beautiful, wonderful ambience and extremely clean throughout. I would certainly recommend this venue."
Another reviewer said: "We always try and stay here 2-3 times a year and have never been disappointed. In summer there are walks in the countryside, in winter the warm fire keeps you snug from the cold outside. The food and service are excellent, and Sam the sommelier certainly knows his stuff. The rooms are all comfortable and we've never not had a good night's sleep there."
The Royal Hotel, Ross on Wye
The charming market town hotel has clearly impressed its customers, as it boasts a rating of 4.5 on TripAdvisor, based on 1848 reviews.
One reviewer said: "The hotel was very friendly. Our room had a lovely river view and was very spacious with a very comfortable sofa. The staff were very efficient and nothing was too much trouble. It was much better than the usual chain hotel. The cooked breakfast is very good value, with a choice of menu."
Another wrote: "I spent three days recently at the Royal with my son. The experience was amazing. Very friendly and helpful staff, great food, excellent variety on the breakfast menu, and wonderful views from our very comfortable and clean bedroom.
"We had two of our evening meals at the hotel which were delicious. We will definitely be back!"
The Kings Head Hotel, Ross on Wye
The historic hotel, which is in the centre of the market town had done well on TripAdvisor, scoring a rating of 4.5 based on 685 reviews. The hotel describes its bedrooms as featuring period features such as oak beams and cosy fireplaces.
One reviewer wrote: "We had another perfect stay at the King's Head! This is a great hotel in every way. The room is always immaculate and so full of character, as is the whole place. The food, as always, was exceptional and all locally sourced. B
"But what tops it all is the wonderful welcome- the staff cannot do enough to make your stay the best it could be. Thank you for your kindness, Magda, and thanks to all the staff, too."
Another said: "Staff, food, service all very very good. Breakfast was awesome [full English]. Evening meal was above your standard pub grub.
Cant fault the location. Stayed for four nights and found nothing to complain about."
Castle House Hotel, Hereford
This grade II listed "boutique" hotel has clearly been a hit with its guests, scoring a 4.5 rating from 669 reviews. The hotel has 24, individually designed, luxury suites and bedrooms.
One reviewer said: "Spent a lovely afternoon with friends. We had the afternoon ‘high tea’ which was very good with plenty of choice and plenty to eat too! One friend had the ‘veggie’ option which was good too.
"Staff were very helpful and attentive. Lovely setting. Well recommended and will definitely go again."
Another wrote: "We have stayed here several times - it is a lovely hotel, great location, breakfasts really good and helpful, friendly staff. We love staying there."
