THUNDERSTORMS and heavy rain could cause flooding, travel disruption and power cuts in Herefordshire tonight (October 7), forecasters have said.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning from 4pm to midnight for Herefordshire and other areas of England and Wales.

The agency said there was a "good chance" that driving conditions would be affected by spray, standing water or hail, while train services may also be disrupted.

Flooding to homes and businesses is also possible, along with "some short-term loss of power", the Met Office added.

Further showers are expected in Herefordshire tomorrow (October 8) and into Wednesday (October 9).

It comes following a wet start to the month for Herefordshire, which has already caused havoc on the roads including a crash on a wet, muddy road yesterday (October 6).

Meteorologist Frank Saunders said: "Areas of heavy showers and thunderstorms will move northwards before clearing overnight.

"Some strong gusts of wind could accompany the heaviest showers and thunderstorms."

Providing an update on the direction of ex-hurricane Kirk which was earlier predicted to hit the UK this week, the Met Office has said there is now increasing confidence that it will track to the south of the UK, bringing heavy rains and strong winds instead to northern France.

Although north and south shifts of the systems track remain possible, the threat of significant impacts to the UK from this system are now much reduced.
