A MAN has been seriously injured in an attack in Hereford city centre, with armed police called to the scene

A cordon was in place across a street in Hereford yesterday afternoon (October 9) after police and paramedics raced to the scene at 4.25pm.

Firearms officers were among those that responded to the call in Moorfield Street in Hereford.

The police cordon was put in place in the street, which is near the Old Market shopping centre, after police were called to reports that two men had sustained knife injuries at a property in the street.

One of the men has suffered serious, potentially life-threatening injuries in what has been described as a serious assault, a West Mercia Police spokesperson confirmed last night.

The spokesperson said the seriously injured man has been airlifted to hospital.

A second man, aged 49, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in the wake of the attack.

Detective inspector Jordan Baker said last night that officers understand locals may be concerned by the incident, but that police believe it to have been an isolated incident.  

"Officers including firearms officers swiftly attended the scene and a man has been arrested," DI Baker said.

A large police presence was at the scene for a number of hours as officers remained on scene while enquiries continued.
