HEREFORDSHIRE should follow the example of Wales and reduce the chances of death and serious injuries on roads and adopt 20 miles per hour policies on roads and streets where people live.
When we look at the six month period since last October, after the 20mph policy came in, there has been a 17 per cent drop in serious road casualties, compared to the same six months in 2022-23.

England used to have one of the best public health policies of any country in the world. Since the 1860s governments have looked at evidence and data on smoking, air pollution, drinking water and road safety (seat belts) and based on data and evidence have introduced legislation to improve public health and reduce deaths and injuries.

This long-standing model has now been abandoned and central government and Herefordshire Council will not act on the evidence that 20mph limits reduce fatalities and serious injuries. We have asked Herefordshire Council to follow the example of councils that do follow an evidence-based approach (Cornwall, Oxfordshire, Cambridgeshire Scottish Borders, Highland Council).
The council has not replied to our request that we follow the evidence and adopt 20mph on the majority of streets and roads where people live.
