This is a reader's letter published in the Hereford Times on October 24.
AS a voter in the recent Credenhill election I am relieved that Gareth Johnston, the Conservative candidate, was not elected as our councillor.
During our doorstep meeting, just days before the election, he clearly said to me that he was against the bypass as there was no current or foreseeable funding for it and alternative solutions to Hereford’s transport infrastructure should be found.

At the time I challenged him whether he was just saying what he thought I wanted to hear and if he would then concede to the local Conservative party pro-bypass policy if elected.

He assured me that as a former military leader he could stand up to pressure and was not for turning.
And now, in his comments reported in the Hereford Times (Tory candidate in bypass row, October 10) he appears to have changed his stance.
I believe he owes Councillor Liz Harvey and the voters of Credenhill ward an apology.
