Plans have been put forward to build two “gateway” houses at a prominent Herefordshire spot by a former pub.
Peter Styles of Worcester-based Fatydam 2 Ltd is seeking planning permission (application 242552) to build the two-bedroom homes on what had been the car park of the Wheatsheaf Inn next to the A44 near the Worcestershire border.
His application describes the car park as “a leftover brownfield site” from the historic pub, which “has a negative impact to the otherwise residential characteristic of the surrounding properties”.

With a curved form mirroring the sweep of the road, they “will act as a featured gateway for the Whitbourne village and a visual marker to the county’s border”, his application says.
Though detached, the two would be mirror images of each other. Each would have two parking spaces, though not garages, and roof-mounted solar panels.

There is a bus stop at the junction for services to Hereford and Bromyard, while the nearby village has a shop and pub, the application points out.
The spot has a complex recent planning history. A previous attempt by Mr Styles to build a single four-bedroom house on the car park was refused in 2017 then dismissed at appeal.

Planning permission to convert the Wheatsheaf Inn itself into a home was eventually granted in August last year, after a previous attempt had also been refused and dismissed at appeal.
An earlier attempt by Mr Styles to combine residential redevelopment of the pub and car park was also unsuccessful.
His latest application seeks to address reasons behind the previous refusals. It can be commented on until November 18.
