PROGRESS is being made on Hereford's future Transport Hub, with work expected to begin in the new year.

Herefordshire council have said the project is currently out for tender to find a construction partner, with a previously published document suggesting the value of works would be over £7 million.

In the invitation to tender, the council said the works would include the incorporation of a new public realm, a bus canopy shelter with an internal waiting area, bus layover facilities on the old Network Rail depot site and national car park reconfiguration.

The development will also provide commuter cycle parking and taxi and car parking areas, including commuter and short-term parking, and welfare facilities.

Cllr Philip Price, Cabinet Member Transport and Infrastructure, said the development would improve travel experience for all, and provide accessible, safe, and eco-friendly transport connections.

“The station and its surrounding area is a key entry point to the city and not only will the Hub tie together public transportation, active travel and improved access, it will also help to revive the local heritage, and create an attractive environment for visitors and commuters.

"Greater opportunities for active travel are also good news for health and wellbeing, and will support the council’s environmental commitments by reducing congestion and improving air quality.”

In response to a public question at a full council meeting on July 26 this year, Mr Price put the forecast total cost of Hereford Transport Hub at £9.8 million and for the work to be completed within 12 months.
