A Hereford chef has made his TV debut, competing on a popular BBC professional cooking show.

Callum McDonald, co-owner and executive chef at the Bookshop restaurant on Aubrey Street was selected as one of only 32 chefs to compete in the new season of MasterChef: The Professionals.

This prestigious competition returned this week for its 17th series, airing on BBC One at 8 pm on Tuesday (October 29).

Despite giving it his all, the chef was knocked out after the first heat, saying goodbye to his fellow competitors.

The Rule of Tum, who own The Bookshop, The Burger Shop, and Leaven Pizza said despite the chef's early exit, they were still incredibly proud of the "tremendous achievement". They added that the selection alone underscores Callum’s "dedication and skill" and that his participation speaks volumes about his commitment to continually pushing his culinary limits.

After training in some of the UK’s top kitchens, Callum joined The Bookshop, where he quickly became a partner and led its transformation into a popular Hereford eatery.

His passion and vision also inspired the opening of Dr Foster, which recently opened in Gloucester Docks, thanks to his "focus on quality and sustainability in every dish".

“We’re incredibly proud of Callum for taking on this challenge and representing The Bookshop and Dr Foster on such a prestigious platform,” said Dorian Kirk, founder and director at Art Hospitality.

“His determination to showcase the essence of British ingredients and to strive for excellence is what makes him a true leader in our kitchens. We’re excited to see how this experience will inspire him moving forward.”
