We recently had the pleasure of eating at En Steak in Hereford's Old Market before its official opening to the public.

The new Hereford site is En Steak's second location, following the success of its restaurant in Birmingham. It is part of the En Group, a local hospitality brand that also owns En BBQ in Old Market.

(Image: Bridie Adams) As you might expect, it is also all about meat. This is perfect for Hereford, a city that is world-famous for its cattle and beef.

(Image: Ryan Parker) We settled in and enjoyed a soft drink each while looking through the menu, which centres on premium local steaks aged for a minimum of 21 days.

En Steak had lots of individual cuts on offer, including a 200g fillet, a 250g sirloin, a 300g rump and a 300g ribeye.

But it was the large "butcher board" steaks, the main attraction, that caught my eye. When customers order the different weights and cuts, they are chalked off the board.

The large cuts include a tomahawk steak (£9.50 per 100g), T-bone (a sirloin and fillet cooked on the bone, £9 per 100g) and the classic French cut chateaubriand (£15.50 per 100g).

My boyfriend and I opted to share a T-bone with garlic and parsley butter, accompanied by peppercorn sauce, chips and salad. We also ordered a side of mac and cheese.

My boyfriend likes his steak medium, while I would prefer mine more well-done, so we split the difference and ordered it medium-well.

We went for the 950g T-bone, the smallest one available at the time, which had a price tag of £85.50. That price also included the butter, sauce, chips and salad.

Our 950g steak did not disappoint. It was tender and flavoursome, cooked to perfection with the beefy flavours shining through and still a little pink. It was served on an oval metal dish and was sliced into pieces that made it easier to eat. I loved the seared charred edges which gave way to soft and tender meat. It had also been well-rested, so all the juices had gone back into the meat.

The steak was accompanied by a generous helping of chips and salad, which were equally impressive. The creamy and decadent mac and cheese we ordered as an additional side was my personal favourite. I also loved the salad, with crisp lettuce and a rich, tangy dressing.

Our bill came to just under £100. We paid around £85 on the night of our visit, as it was during the soft launch.

The prices may be on the more expensive side but this is what you would expect for a fancy place with high-quality food. I thought it was a reasonable price for a special occasion meal, although not something most people would splash out on often.

We agreed that we would visit again next time we want a special date night, perhaps on a birthday or anniversary.
