A Herefordshire town plans a full slate of Christmas events, even though major resurfacing works disrupting movement around it are still some way from completion.
Herefordshire Council, which is in charge of works under Leominster “Heritage Action Zone” scheme, says it has told town-centre businesses it expects to complete the work on roads and pavements by November 29.
“The Leominster community will now see our contractor, MF Freeman, starting to remove their compound area in Corn Square so that the final improvements can be undertaken,” it added.

The town council has meanwhile said in its ongoing budget consultation that its Christmas lights set-up “has been organised to work around ongoing town centre improvement works”.
And in a leaflet going out shortly to residents, the town council says it still intends that the town’s renowned Victorian Street Market will go ahead on December 14.
“Corn Square and Broad Street, as well Grange Court, Leominster Sports and Social Club and the Lion Ballroom will be filled with stalls selling handmade and locally produced gifts, food and drink, perfect for the festive period,” it says.

Other planned festive events include Winter Wonderland, a free event for children in the Secret Garden behind the council chambers on the evenings of November 29 and 30 for which tickets are still available from council offices, and a Christmas Tree Festival in Leominster Priory on December 7.
Former mayor Coun Trish Marsh said the town council “is working hard to make sure that, whatever the state of the roadworks, there will be lots of festive activity happening in Leominster in the run-up to Christmas”.
She added there has been “confusion” locally that the town council “is somehow involved in the roadworks – which they aren’t”.
