STUDENTS at one Herefordshire school have put community first with a huge donation.
The generosity of students, staff and the wider community at Hereford Academy, who have been collecting donations for those in need, has now resulted in a significant boost for Hereford Foodbank.
The school’s initiative began at the start of the new academic year in September and, as part of a house competition, donations of non-perishable foods and toiletries were collected and then donated.

An amazing 1,719 items were donated in total, with Salisbury House claiming victory for the most items donated.
Hereford Foodbank has been operating since 2008 and is based at 41 Monkmoor Street. The charity provides food parcels for the community and emergency support for those in need and the majority of the food they distribute is donated by members of the community and local businesses.
Assistant headteacher Will Taylor, who led the initiative, said: “We have been humbled and amazed by the show of kindness and generosity from our school family.

“At a time when people’s finances may be stretched, it is even more extraordinary that such a huge collection of items were donated. The Hereford Foodbank were extremely grateful for the donation from our school’s community and in the end so much was donated that it required three visits to the school to collect everything!
“We want to thank all students, staff, parents and carers who have given generously to this very worthwhile cause and we are very much looking forward to our next charity venture.”
As the school year continues, The Hereford Church of England Academy will be seeking further opportunities to support the local community and other charities.
