HEREFORDSHIRE'S worst crash blackspots have been revealed.

The spots have been named as a Herefordshire parish council continues its bid to stop crashes on one rural road.

Councillors heard at a recent meeting of North Bromyard Group Parish Council that the top three crash blackspots in the county are Locks Garage, High Cross (Upper Sapey Crossroads), and Ridgecross.

The revelation came after months of deliberations on improving driver safety at the crossroads in Upper Sapey following a string of crashes over the years.

Back in July, a public parish council meeting heard from a number of locals about their fears over the road, with a 30 miles per hour speed limit requested and a petition launched by locals. 

A Herefordshire Highways representative was at the meeting and was asked by locals about various options, including traffic lights, rumble strips, and stop signs, but minutes said there was "disappointment" that there appeared to be little that could be done.

Now, recently published minutes said, councillors have been told by ward councillor Peter Stoddart that, after speaking with Herefordshire Council's road safety officer and the services director, the best solution would be to stagger the road.

The parish council minutes said £3 million has been put towards next year's capital programme budget to redesign the three worst blackspots, along with £100,000 from this year’s budget get the design work done. This will be considered by Herefordshire Council at a meeting in February.

Councillors were "surprised that the crossroads had been classed as the second-worst in Herefordshire", the minutes said, with Coun Stoddart explaining that this is mainly due to how crashes are logged by the police, with officers having to be called out for them to be logged.
