ANSWERS are being demanded after sewage spewed from a toilet and manholes during recent flooding in Herefordshire.

Heavy rain saw flooding cause chaos across Herefordshire in October, with roads and schools closed across the county.

Among the areas hit by floods was Canon Pyon, where questions are now being asked about the sewers after effluent escaped during the recent floods.

Recently published draft minutes from the November meeting of Pyons Group Parish Council said Welsh Water's water treatment works in Canon Pyon was "inundated" during the floods, with the sewage system backed up.

Effluent was reported to have escaped through manholes and, in at least one case into a home via a downstairs toilet.

There were also fears that the number of roads flooded in the area meant that emergency services would not be able to respond.

Councillors resolved to ask Welsh Water to report on the failings of the sewers upstream of the waste water treatment works, including on effluent escaping through manhole covers and entering homes through the foul drainage system.

Herefordshire Council would be asked to resurvey the Canon Pyon drainage system, while Stonewater Housing Association would be asked to reconsider building a wall with flood gates to protect its properties

The parish council will also work with Herefordshire Council and locals to produce a flood mitigation strategy, and weaknesses revealed by the flooding will be used to direct the lengthsman's work with the aim of keeping at least one route open.

The ward councillor and MP Ellie Chowns would be asked to raise these issues with Herefordshire Council and Welsh Water, the minutes said.
