I was shocked to see that Ross-on-Wye’s Morrisons supermarket has been handed a one-star rating by food hygiene inspectors (online: Herefordshire supermarket gets rating of ONE from food hygiene inspector, November 16).

We don’t have a full breakdown of why it got this rating, but we do know that it was told ‘major improvement’ was necessary for both the cleanliness and condition of buildings and facilities, and for management of food safety.

That is not great, in my book.

I understand that sometimes mistakes are made, and businesses trying their best can find themselves in trouble with hygiene inspectors, but this is part of a national chain that surely has plenty of rules, regulations, and best-practice procedures in place to ensure it stays up to standard.

You can send a letter to the editor to have your say by clicking here.

Letters should not exceed 250 words and local issues take precedence.

It also feeds thousands of people weekly, which places a huge burden of responsibility on the shop management to ensure it is clean, tidy, and well-managed for public safety.

I note from the Hereford Times article that Morrisons is addressing the issues and hopes to be re-rated soon, but why was it allowed to happen in the first place?

In short, a supermarket getting this rating should never happen.
