THE recent snow in Herefordshire has really highlighted the county’s pothole problem to me.

Herefordshire’s roads have had problems with potholes for years, and it has been great to see the council has been allocating funds to repairing them properly in recent months.

The stretches of road that have been resurfaced in the county are great and in honesty I think the works were well overdue as patching single potholes never really works, they always come back with a vengeance.

But it is only small parts of Herefordshire’s road network that have had this treatment, and there are still plenty of problem areas.

These include the A417 between Burley Gate and Newtown Cross, where there are some nasty potholes ready to catch you out, and the snow makes it that bit worse. Travelling in the early morning when the roads are still covered in unmelted snow makes this even worse, because you can’t see them at all. Cue bone-rattling bangs as you drive right into them, followed by panicked pulling over on the side of the road to check that your tyres are all still inflated.

Snow or no snow, though, we shouldn’t have to be dodging potholes on Herefordshire’s main roads. Neighbouring counties don’t seem to have such widespread terrible problems with their roads, so why do we?

Herefordshire Council, you’ve resurfaced some, now please resurface the rest!
