This is a reader's letter published in the Hereford Times on November 28.
GETTING behind our farmers over inheritance tax is all very well, but the reality is that we do not value the food they produce (Get behind our farmers, November 21).

Farmers operate on the slimmest, if any, of profit margins as sales prices are largely determined by the supermarkets. Supermarkets drive prices down, but there is a cost. In this country we waste 9.6 million tons of food each year.

One-third of the food produced globally is wasted.
I have seen guests in hotel restaurants serve themselves to gluttonous platefuls from the buffet, only to leave half of it. We do not value our food, and we do not value our farmers.
If the farmers blockade the ports, and snap our very fragile food chain, we may well learn to value what we have, what we take for granted, and appreciate that you do not bite the hand that feeds you.
