JUNIOR FOOTBALL - The Junior Football Academy now has enough players for one under-9s team, two teams for the under-11s and one for the under-14s, but need more people to help run the teams if they’re going to play the league next season. Chairman Gary Cooper congratulated coach, Gareth Watkins, and Wayne Farmer and urged people who could help these youngsters to come forward. The under-11s meet on Wednesday evening from 6pm to 7pm and the under-14s from 7pm to 8pm. Anyone interested in helping, call Gareth on 07814 399766 or Gary on 07817 515914.
FORTIETH BIRTHDAY - Colin Davies, from near Lloyney, celebrated his 40th birthday with a party organised by his family, and asked for donations for the Macmillan Renton Unit, in memory of his brother, Gary, who died in August 2007. A total of £1,100 was generously donated and presented by Colin to Alan Lloyd, leader of the Hereford County Hospital cancer campaign. Thanks go to Colin’s family and all the guests for their generosity.
AUCTION OF PAINTINGS - Paintings by Helen Hopkins will be auctioned at St Edwards Church Hall on Thursday, May 15. Viewing will be at 7pm and the auction will start at 7.30pm. Proceeds to go to Hope House Children’s Hospice. Admission is £1 to include wine or coffee.
PYJAMA WALK - Harri and Ray Smith will be walking from the Lake in Llandrindod Wells to The Red Lion in their pyjamas to raise money for Radnorshire Healthy Friendships of which Harri is the assistant co-ordinator. The charity helps support adults who experience mental health distress. The walk starts at 7am, on Sunday, May 18, The 20-mile walk will be a bit challenging for the couple who admit to not being used to walking very far. Special guests included Councillor Ken Fincham, mayor of Knighton, other town councillors, the president of Knighton and District Probus, Barry Palmer, Bob Chard of Powys County Council Social Services and two health visitors.
TRACTOR ROAD RUN - The Teme Valley Vintage Club annual tractor run attracted a record 103 tractors, including one from Cheshire. A new trophy called The John Biggs Memorial Cup for the best turned out tractor was presented to Estyn Gough from Knighton. The trophy was donated by McConnels in Ludlow in memory of John who died last year. Over £1,000 was raised and proceeds will go to charity including Macmillan Renton Unit Appeal.
STUART RETIRES - Stuart Deakins, who has been a member of the council in Llangunllo for the last 55 years, was presented with a plaque and pen set to mark his retirement.
FUNDS RAISED - Proceeds from a Central Wales Auto Club Motorbike Trial held at Cwmgilla Farm near Knighton have been donated to the Davies family in memory of Gary Davies. The money, a total of £250, will be passed on to Macmillan Cancer Support.
SILVER BAND TROLLEY DASH - The two-minute dash was won by Peter Reynolds, who managed to get goods worth a total of £57.57. The draw made a total of £695.43, which will go into the band’s instrument fund.
NEW PLANTERS AT SCHOOL - Knighton Primary School has six new planters in the school quad. The planters were put together by dads David Beech and Martin Neary in their spare time. The school will now have the chance to grow a variety of plants.
FARMERS’ MARKET - This Saturday, from 9.30am to 1pm.
COFFEE MORNING - Knighton and District Churches Together have organised a coffee morning on May 17, in St Edward’s Church Hall from 10.30am to 12.30pm. Proceeds to Christian Aid.
WALK - A four-and-a-half mile walk in aid of St Andrew’s, Norton, will take place on Sunday around part of the Norton parish. Starting at 2pm, dogs on leads are welcome. £5 minimum sponsorship. Call 01544 267343 for details.
SPRING MUSICAL EVENING - This is on Saturday, May 17, at 7.30pm, at St Andrews, Norton, featuring The Bravo Four, John Games, Glasnant Morgan and local talent including harpist Menna Breeze. £5 on the door, children free.
