MACMILLAN MILE - There are still sponsor forms available in several Knighton shops for those who wish to take part in the Macmillan Mile annual charity walk on Tuesday, May 20. The walk will start from the Knighton Hotel car park, go up Broad Street, down by the Offa’s Dyke Centre, to the river, along the river to Kinsley Road and then back to town stopping at the Kinsley for refreshments. CHRISTIAN AID COFFEE MORNING - A coffee morning for Christian Aid will be held in the church hall, Knighton, on Saturday at 10.30am. There will also be items for sale to raise extra funds. TREF-Y-CLAWDD WI MEETING - Members of Tref-y-Clawdd WI gathered at Norton Street Baptist Church for this year’s resolutions meeting. The next meeting is on June 4, at 7.30pm, when Rosalind Johnansson will be talking about Swalheli textiles. The competition will be for an African memento. AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL - The Knighton and District Amnesty International group is holding a cup cake and music event at Brookside Square, Knighton, on Saturday, May 24, from 10am to noon. Joyce Riley, a member of the group, said thank you to all the people of Knighton and the surrounding area who supported Amnesty last year. They were able to donate £1,200. RAINBOWS - Knighton Rainbows and their leaders celebrated 21 years of Rainbows last week. Rainbows in Knighton was started up 14 years ago but nationally the youngest Girl Guiders are celebrating their 21st birthday. As part of the celebrations, Knighton Rainbows and their leaders turned up to their weekly meeting wearing 21 different items of clothing or jewellery. At the end of the session the girls aged from five to seven sang ‘happy birthday’ to Rainbows and had some birthday cake. SPINNING AND WEAVING - To coincide with an exhibition at The Tower House Gallery, Knighton, showing the work of local people, there was a chance to learn how to spin and weave. Yvonne Baker from Knighton, whose work was on display in the gallery, demonstrated the art of spinning and weaving. PUDDING AND PUNCH EVENING - Around 40 members, friends and family of Tref-y-Clawdd WI gathered in Knighton Methodist Church for the WI’s punch and pudding evening. There were over 20 puddings to sample. To drink there were three different fruit punches. The evening was held in memory of Betty Richards, a former member of Tref-y-Clawdd WI, who, in her will, left money to be used in all the WIs in Powys/Radnor. Betty’s daughter and granddaughter attended the event which raised £157 for the WI. HOME INTERNATIONAL DRAUGHTS - Top draughts players from four countries took part in the home international draughts tournament held in The Knighton Hotel. Teams competing were two each from England and the Republic of Ireland and one each from Wales and Northern Ireland. The event was organised by local pensioner John Morgan from Knighton who has been playing draughts for many years, and is a member of the Welsh team. LLANBISTER WHIST DRIVE - A whist drive took place in Llanbister Community Hall. MC for the evening was Gwyn Morgan. Pat Allen proposed a vote of thanks, and proceeds will go to Christian Aid. LLANBISTER WI - There were 12 members present at the May meeting which started with a demonstration by Crackpots who gave members the opportunity to paint their own pottery. The business part of the meeting followed. They discussed the theme for the Victorian festival which is ‘Celebrations’, and selection will take place on Friday, May 23, at Crossgates Community Centre. On Tuesday, May 20, there will be a flower arranging demonstration at Rhayader WI. The competition on the evening for best pink animal or bird was won by Maureen Gayther, who also won the mystery prize, second, June Pettit, third, Olwen Wilson. The next meeting will be on June 3, with speaker Allen Quincy on the subject of calligraphy.
