LOCAL HERO - John Cochrane who works at Sainsbury’s Barton Yard, Hereford, as a checkout assistant and is a member of the Fowler Foundation for Children with Aids in Cambodia, Vietnam and Rwanda, regularly organises fundraising events for the foundation. He is now able to donate £200 to the foundation thanks to Sainsbury’s Local Heroes Matched funding scheme. Sainsbury’s recognises that many colleagues support local charities outside of work. To support these activities, the Local Heroes scheme makes donations of £200 towards colleagues’ chosen causes. The foundation was founded by Philip Fowler of Symonds & Co, Widemarsh Street, Hereford, in June 2005 and has supported many children in Vietnam and Cambodia supplying clothes and funds for life-saving drugs. Life preserving medicine costs £20 a month per child. They now also support widows and orphans in Rwanda where £50 helps to set up widows in a micro-business so that they are able to support themselves and their children. The charity’s next event is a concert by the Talgarth Male Voice Choir at St Peter and St Paul’s Parish Church on Friday, June 6. For details, call 01544 318393.
