A COUNTY farm foreman is swapping farmland for the open road in a unique fundraising challenge.
Gary Bluett is getting on his bike and heading for Inverness, Canterbury and Truro.
Yet that’s just the start for the cyclist, who is attempting to visit all 56 Anglican cathedrals in the UK in just 25 days.
Mr Bluett, aged 48, is attempting the 2,600-mile journey on behalf of MacMillan Cancer Support and his local church in Letton.
He set off from Letton on Saturday, May 10, and had notched up six Welsh cathedrals by the following Thursday.
Mr Bluett is married with two grown-up children and has worked on the Letton Court Estate for 27 years.
He completed a similar challenge in 2006 when he did a fundraising cycle from Letton to London.
Then, he raised £5,800 which was split between the Prostate Cancer Charity and Letton Church.
While there have been setbacks – including a thunderstorm near Haverfordwest and getting lost near Bridgend – the rider is meeting his target of 72 miles a day, and appears in high spirits on his blog.
“It’s going well after early trouble with the gears on the bike, a problem solved for nothing by the kind people in Halfords in Carmarthen,” he writes.
“I have already ticked off six of the 56 Cathedrals I am hoping to visit, so just the other 50 to go.” Gary is currently heading towards Inverness, his most northerly stop, before heading south towards Aberdeen and the north east of England. If everything goes to plan, he should return to Herefordshire during the first week of June.
