PLANS for a major composting site have been on show in a Herefordshire village.
The proposal, by waste management contractor Severn Waste Services, is for a facility on land at upper House Farm, Moreton-on-Lugg.
If planning permission is granted, the site will take green garden waste from household waste sites across Herefordshire.
An exhibition at Moreton-on-Lugg Village Hall took place last Friday and Saturday.
Ian Barber, Severn Waste’s marketing director, said the company had spent a long time searching for the right location.
“It was originally planned for Rotherwas but it would have been too close to a residential area,” he said. “Here, it is going to be half a mile from anything really.” Around 6,500 tonnes of garden waste is taken to waste management sites in Herefordshire, most of which is currently composted near Pershore, Worcestershire.
“The new site at Upper House Farm will give Herefordshire its own composting facility, so cutting down on waste tonne miles and providing a local source of high-quality, peat-free soil conditioner,” added Mr Barber.
“The facility will only process green garden materials. Without animal or food wastes or other noxious materials, we do not foresee any adverse impacts from the operation.
“The site is well located in respect to the main population centres and the traffic generated by the scheme will have no significant impact on overall volumes locally.” Severn Waste hope to submit an application to Herefordshire planners early in June.
