A ROSS-on-Wye youngster has become the only Englishman to appear at the Euro 2008 football final.

James Payne has won a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be a player escort at the June 29 final in Vienna.

His success in a McDonald’s competition means he’ll walk-out with Europe’s best footballers before a TV audience of millions. James, aged 11, is loving it and was given a send-off last week by an England World Cup legend.

Sir Geoff Hurst came to McDonald’s at Belmont last Friday to give James his ticket.

The young Chelsea fan was all smiles after meeting the 1966 hat-trick hero. “I couldn’t believe I won – I’m a little bit nervous, but really excited and can’t wait to go,” said James, who tips France for glory.

James will travel to Austria with 16-year-old Joe Loftus, his coach at Ross Junior Colts FC.

Asked why the coach deserved a trip to the final, James nominated Joe in the McDonald’s competition, calling him “a brilliant coach” who makes training “really fun”.

HE ended their giant-killing aspirations in 1972 – but Sir Geoff Hurst was full of kind words for Hereford United.

The former striker said he was pleased for Graham Turner’s side following their promotion to League One.

Sir Geoff scored a hat-trick against Hereford in the FA Fourth Round replay at Upton Park, following a 0-0 draw at Edgar Street.

He called Hereford a tough side to play against.

“I did note that Hereford were promoted but I don’t know much about the team – I played against Hereford a long time ago and it’s good to see them doing so well.

“It’s good for a team to go up the league because a football club can generate great interest, not just for the town and fans of the club, but for the community as well. That’s why football is important, it’s part of the community.”
