MORE than 90 per cent of Hay businesses have pledged their support for a scheme which aims to rid the town of plastic bags.
Around 100 retailers have signed up to The End of Plastic Bags campaign after it launched last December to promote the use of degradable cornstarch Biobags or paper ones.
Four retailers are also selling canvas ecobags produced with a Sustainable Development Fund grant and the town’s Co-op supermarket is promoting its own compostable bags.
Campaign organiser Catherine Carlton-Smith said: “I have just come from the Co-op and the vast majority of shoppers had also already brought in their own bags - so a big change in behaviour which was just what we were looking for.”
