THE RSPCA is appealing for anglers to take greater care after a swan was rescued because it became tangled in fishing line.

The swan was rescued from a lake at Trevase Farm, Tretire, near St Owens Cross, after the RSPCA found fishing line stuck down its throat and wrapped round its body.

Two RSPCA inspectors and one animal collection officer took to the water on Wednesday (June 4) to rescue the swan.

Using a boat they managed to capture it and gently removed the fishing line. The swan was not injured and was released back on the lake.

Debbie Large, RSPCA inspector, said: “Discarding fishing line and lethal litter is a life-threatening danger to birds and wildlife.

"We urge all fisherman and members of the public to take their rubbish home with them at the end of the day as litter causes suffering and death to many wild animals.

“All boat rescues have to be pre-planned as more than one officer is required for such a rescue.

"This swan was very fortunate not to have sustained any injuries which required veterinary treatment which is so often the case.

"We were therefore delighted that the swan could be released on the day and is now back where it belongs on the lake free from pain.”

The RSPCA also stated that the swan was unable to fly or eat due to the lethal litter before the rescue.
