OPEN MEETING – An open meeting to discuss the move of Knighton’s post office from the top of Broad Street in Knighton to Harry Tuffins supermarket will be held at Knighton Community Centre tomorrow (Friday) at 7pm.
FARMERS’ AND CRAFT MARKET – Knighton farmers’ and craft market will be held on Saturday from 9.30am to 1pm in Knighton Community Centre. COTTAGE GARDEN PARTY – Knighton Friends of Barbados Cymru are celebrating their 25th anniversary with a cottage garden party at Lower Skyborry Cottage by kind permission of Mrs A M Davies. The cottage is situated on the back road between Knighton and Llanfairwaterdine.
There will be signs showing the treasure trail to the garden. For those who would like to walk, following the Offa’s Dyke path, meet at 2pm in the Offa’s Dyke car park. If anyone is unable to walk and requires transport contact 01547 528962 or 01520572. Parking is available. The event will start around 3pm and entry is free.
KNUCKLAS CHAPEL ANNIVERSARY – Knucklas Baptist Chapel will be holding its 83rd anniversary on Sunday when there will be a special service at 6.30pm led by Rev Patrick Baker, a former minister at Knighton.
ANNIVERSARY SUPPER – There will be a special supper to celebrate the chapel’s anniversary tomorrow (Friday) at 7pm. Tickets are available from Walter Evans on 01547 528281.
LADIES’ BOWLING CLUB – On Friday, June 6, Knighton Ladies played Presteigne Ladies away in the Brecon and Radnorshire league. Captain Sue Jones said: “It was a good game and all players played well.” On rink 1, Sue Jones, Gill Warrington, Jess Price and Julia Watts won their game. On rink 2, Hazel Peacock, Brenda Aspley, Carol Didlick and Mai Davies lost after a very enjoyable game. Overall Presteigne came out on top.
TREF-Y-CLAWDD WI – Tref-y-Clawdd WI ladies met on Wednesday, June 4, in the school room of Norton Street Baptist Church. Shirley Moorhouse thanked everybody who helped at the county show held recently in Knighton Community Centre. Member Jean Coulthard came second in the photo category with her photo of the ladies boarding the train for their day out in Swansea. Others received good marks with entries in other categories enabling Tref-Y-Clawdd WI to come seventh overall. The next meeting on Wednesday, July 2, will start at 7pm and the speaker will be Amy Duffill on her trip to the international scout and guide camp. The competition will be for three homemade scones.
GARDEN PARTY – The WI’s garden party will be held at the home of Rosemary Eyke in Knighton on Wednesday, July 30.
OUTING – The annual WI outing to Ten Green Bottles is now on Wednesday, August 13.
SCHOOL PTA QUIZ – A quiz night held at the Knighton Hotel raised over £180 for John Beddoes PTA. The money will be used to benefit the pupils in the school. The quiz attracted 14 teams of four. Paul Williams, PTA president, thanked Pete Carroll of the Knighton Hotel for hosting the quiz, being the quiz master and providing some of the prizes. The next PTA meeting is on Tuesday, June 24, at 7pm in the Knighton Hotel or call 01547 528665 for details.
LLANBISTER WI – The president welcomed 13 members to the June meeting. Minutes were read and signed. From the county newsletter it was stated that there would be two days for a cake stall in the marque at The Victorian Festival in Llandrindod Wells.
TAFF TRAIL CYCLE RIDE – Cycle riders from Knighton recently cycled the Taff Trail in aid of charity. The ride was organised by Francis Kilby, and other riders included Mike Kemp, Jake and Angie Jones and Tom and Jeannie Owens. The next ride will be held over the weekend of July 5 and 6 which will include cyclists from Kington/Lyonshall, with a back-up team from the Lions at Kington. This will follow a route defined by the Offa’s Dyke path about 175 miles long. This time they will be collecting money for St Edward’s Church and the local Cub Scouts. BOY/GIRL RACERS – At a PACT meeting held recently in the Knighton Hotel, residents and councillors in Knighton expressed concerns to local police officer PC Bill Cowen and his colleagues about the boy/girl racers who were continually driving dangerously around the town. Anyone concerned about anti-social driving, commonly referred to as boy/girl racers, is asked to contact their local police on 0845 3302000.
