PRESTEIGNE PACERS – The Presteigne Pacers running club celebrated their 25th anniversary at Titley Village Hall last weekend. A small group of people started meetings in Presteigne in 1982. The club grew and has around 25 members. Some members have competed in events around the world and the club has been known to take on people who have never run a mile and got them to run half marathons.
THANKYOU – The Radnorshire Arms recently held a race night. They wish to thank everyone who contributed to the evening. A total of £219 was raised and will be given to The Wish House Hospice. A certificate will be on display in the hotel soon.
SING OUT! 2 – There is an evening of poetry with Hereford singer/songwriter Lou Richardson and Tony Walton telling American poems for Independence Day at the Assembly Rooms on Friday, July 4, at 8pm. Admission is £7 for adults and £5 for concessions. All proceeds will go to Rainbow Developement in Africa.
WI – The next meeting of the WI is next Wednesday at 2.30pm in St Andrew’s Church Hall. This month’s speaker will be David Gorton on life as viewed by a wheelchair-user. For more information call Presteigne 267146.
MIDSUMMER BARBECUE – There is a midsummer barbecue down by the river at Yew Tree Farm in Discoed on Friday, June 20, at 7.30pm. Music wiEntrance is £5 and £5 per plate of food from the barbecue. QUIZ – The first Presteigne Football Club quiz was won by Carol Beaumont who won £10. Organiser Paula Bufton would like to thank everyone who had a go and to the shops and pubs who sold them. The next quiz (which will be a little bit easier) will be available on July 1.
LUNCH – Fifty members of the North Herefordshire Farm Women’s Club had lunch at the Memorial Hall. The speaker was Mrs Barbara Vessey who gave a talk entitled ‘British Boys for British Farms’. The proceeds of the draw were donated to East Radnor Day Centre.
SERVICE – There is a service of Holy Communion at St Andrew’s Church this Sunday at 11am. All are welcome.
GARDEN PARTY – There is a family garden party this Saturday afternoon at The Radnorshire Arms. Children’s entertainer Looby Loo will be there plus much more. For details, call 267406.
LIVE MUSIC WEEKEND – There is a chance to see the band Nizlopi at The Dome this Friday evening from 8pm. Also playing will be The Martin Harley Band. MOTORCYCLE RIDE – There is a motorcycle ride to the coast this Saturday starting from Presteigne at 9am. All abilities are welcome and a £5 donation for The Air Ambulance would be appreciated. For more details, call Gary on 07775 834170.
CASCOB CHURCH – The friends of Cascob Church are holding a concert at the church featuring The Llanfair Singers and Richard Lewis this Saturday at 7pm. PUBLIC MEETING – There is a public meeting entitled ‘No Wind Farms’ at The Memorial Hall on Wednesday, June 18, at 7pm. All are welcome.
LIVE MUSIC – The local band Feel the Need is playing at The Royal Oak this Saturday from 8pm. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.
OPEN HOUSE – There is an open house at Upper House this Saturday from 10am to 6pm. It is a rare chance to visit this beautiful Tudor manor house and the workshops of John Nethercott. Admission to both is £7.50. For more information, call 01547 560369.
EVERGREEN TRIP – The Evergreen Club is organising a weekend trip to Llandudno from May 1 to 4, 2009. They are staying in a three-star hotel on the promenade with dinner and bed and breakfast with two half-day excursions. The cost based on two sharing is £199 per person. OPEN GARDENS – Knill gardens will be open this Saturday and Sunday from 2pm to 6pm both days. Admission is £3 for adults and free for children. There will be music from The Halcyon Singers in the garden on Sunday at 3pm.
EAST RADNOR DAY CENTRE – There is a concert in aid of the day centre at the Memorial Hall this Saturday evening. Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. The Ithon Singers will be the entertainment supported by Ken, Mike and John, The Two Gareths, Yvonne Mills and others. Tickets are £6 and are avalaible from the day centre on 260267 or Pat on 260823 or they can be purchased on the door. The day centre is holding its AGM next Monday at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.
OUTING – The Evergreen Club is organising a trip to Evesham Country Park and Garden Centre on Wednesday, June 25. The cost is £5.50 for members and £6.50 for non-members. To book a place, call Pat on 260823. Next Wednesday, there will be a mystery afternoon trip and on Tuesday, July 23, a trip to Aberystwyth.
FLORAL ARTS SOCIETY – There is a club outing to Abbey House Gardens in Malmesbury next Wednesday. The cost will be £6.50 for entrance to the gardens and a tour plus a share for the coach. For more information, call 267482.
PRESTEIGNE RACES – This year’s Presteigne races are on Saturday, June 28, at Broadheath Common. The first race is at 1.30pm and there is a licensed bar and bookmakers. Under-16s are free. For more information, call the secretary on 01497 847603.
SING-A-LONG – Come and sing for your supper at Lingen Methodist Church this Sunday evening at 6.30pm. It will be an evening of well-known hymns by Knighton Methodist Church choir followed by refreshments. There will be a collection towards the church funds.
NORTON CAMEO – Norton Cameo is organising a trip to Arley Hall and Gardens in Cheshire next Tuesday. The cost is £8 for members, £9 for non-members and £5.75 for entrance to the hall and gardens. Please call 267245 to book a place.
KINSHAM FETE – The annual Kinsham fete is at Kinsham Court on Saturday, June 21, from 2pm. There will be a grand draw with a first prize of £100 as well as refreshments, games, etc. Entry is £1 or free for under-12s.

NEW MAYOR – At the May meeting of Presteigne and Norton Town Council, Councillor Colin Kirby was elected as mayor for his fifth term of office. The outgoing mayor, Councillor Howard Owens, welcomed the new members to the town council. Before commencing proceedings he asked that a minute’s silence be observed in memory of Mrs Rowe, a former town councillor who died recently. Councillor John Wilding was elected to serve as the deputy mayor.
