TWO students at Hereford's Royal National College for the Blind have raised more than £500 with a sponsored silence.

Amie Ballinger and Amy Thompson, aged 17 and 19 and both in their first year at the College Road campus, stayed quiet for a whole day, managing to raise £528 for Macmillan Cancer Support and Breast Cancer Haven in the process.

Their tutor, Ged Friery, joked that the day benefited both the students and their teachers.

"Both girls are very lively, so staff were more than happy to contribute to keeping them quiet for a day.

"It was a struggle for them, but they managed a whole day of silence."

Sarah Grout, Macmillan fundraising manager, said: "When the silence was over the girls just screamed.

"The Royal National College is a charity itself, so it really is incredibly generous of these students to consider working so hard for the benefit of other charities."
