HAY-ON-WYE residents have been busy celebrating the town’s newfound Fairtrade status.
Fairtrade Hay Committee members were overjoyed to receive an official certificate after a year’s campaigning, which included the launch of a Fairtrade Directory in March, to get it.
New mayor Peter Lloyd joined them at a Parish Hall party sponsored by Oxfam Cymru to mark the accolade, where he was presented with the document itself.
Jo Eliot, from Fairtrade Hay, said: “The council is committed to supporting Fairtrade in the town and using Fairtrade products.
A proportion of local retailers sell and businesses use Fairtrade products. Faith groups in the town use and support Fairtrade.
Events are held to promote and raise awareness of Fairtrade.”
Short films on Fairtrade bananas and chocolate were also shown alongside stalls selling Fairtrade products from across the world, including from Hay’s twin town Timbuktu.
