TWINNING VISIT – A group of families from our twin town of Ligne, France, are coming to sample Presteigne life. The French visitors will be bringing some French produce with them which will be for sale at Presteigne market on Saturday, July 5, from 9am to 1pm in the Memorial Hall, Presteigne. They will be staying with local families from Friday, July 4, until Monday, July 7.

COPPER CABLE THEFT – Sometime between 11pm on Monday, June 16, and 6am on Tuesday, June 17, approximately £200 worth of multi-core copper cabling was stolen from the rear yard of the Kaye Alloy factory in Harpers Lane, Presteigne. The persons responsible for this theft have used some form of van or pick-up truck which was driven up the waste land at the bottom of Broad Street in Presteigne. They then accessed this yard via the rear garden of a Broad Street resident. Anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in and around the waste ground off Broad Street, or around the Kaye factory overnight is asked to contact the local police. Anyone who has seen persons or vehicles acting in a strange or suspicious manner in the same area over the past few days are also asked to make that call as it may well be that the thieves have been in the area surveying their potential target. FOOTBALL CLUB – Presteigne Football Club is starting pre-season training at John Beddoes School playing fields on Thursday, July 3. All players from the four teams from last season are asked to attend as well as any new faces wishing to play next season. THANKYOU – The East Radnor Day Centre would like to thank everyone who came to the concert on Saturday, June 14, at the Memorial Hall when a grand total of £548 was raised. Special thanks must go to Mrs Pat Morris for organising the concert and to all the wonderful performers who gave their time free. A new quiz is now available to purchase for £1. It is a numbers with a first prize of £10. All proceeds will go to the day centre.

SWIM FOR ASTHMA – It’s back! The swim for asthma is on Monday, July 21, at East Radnor Day Centre. Organiser Marie Watson wants to beat last year’s total which was £1,000. You can swim as a team or family or on your own. Everyone is welcome, any age or ability. (Under-8s must be with an adult). You can set your own goal – swim as much or little as you want. You can get a sponsorship form from the leisure centre reception or call Marie on 260302.

TEA AND A CHAT – Don’t forget you are still welcome to a free cup of tea and a chat at the Methodist Church every Monday afternoon from 2.30pm to 4pm.

NATIONAL ARCHAEOLOGY WEEK – There is a tour of Stapleton Castle on Sunday, July 13, at 2.30pm. The cost is £4 for adults and £2.50 for under-16s. Tickets are limited and must be purchased in advance from the Judges Lodgings on 260650.

GARDENING CLUB - Lingen Gardening Club is visiting Westonbury Mill Water Gardens at Pembridge next Tuesday at 7.30pm instead of their monthly meeting. CLASSICS OF YESTERYEAR – This year’s Classics of Yesteryear display is on Sunday, July 6, at Arkwright Hall in Kinsham from 2pm to 6pm. On show will be classic cars, commercials, buses, tractors, motorcycles and stationary engines. There is free entry for exhibitors from 11am (donations welcome). There will be refreshments, a barbecue, a raffle, stalls, exhibits and much more. Admission is £2 for adults and £1 for under-14s. 90TH BIRTHDAY - Presteigne-born Jim Roberts celebrated his 90th birthday on May 31 with his wife Glenys, daughter Rosalyn and her youngest son James from Belgium. Also daughter Anne Marie, grandchildren Euan, Amy, son and daughter-in-law Bryn and Kirsty, grandchildren Sam, Evan, Ruth and son and daughter-in-law Gareth and Barbara, Gavin, Jason and Georgie. Along with 80 people who called at his home in Lugg View on the Saturday and Sunday afternoons, glorious weather helped the celebrations when people were able to sit on the lawn and enjoy a drink and chat.

At Jim’s request, there were no presents and the kindness of visitors and their generosity soon filled up a donation box; a total of £300 was collected. Jim and Glenys divided the money between the East Radnor Day Centre (£150), Presteigne and Norton Community Transport (£75) and £75 to Presteigne Medical Centre’s fund for purchasing equipment for the surgery. Jim and Glenys thank everyone who attended and who donated, it was a very enjoyable, interesting weekend, which was so good for Jim and a birthday to remember.
