SIGNATURES on a petition to save Herefordshire’s post offices have reached more than 7,000.

The exact amount of 7,169 signatures mean that one in every 10 households in the county have added their names to show their opposition to the closures.

The campaign now wants to reach 10,000 signatures before taking the petition to Downing Street on July 17.

Campaign co-ordinator, Jesse Norman, said: “It is fantastic to be able to announce more than 7,000 signatures to date, it really underlines how angry local people are about this issue.”

It is estimated that as many as 25 post offices could be at risk in Herefordshire.

However, there is some good news as one county post office bucks the trend.

Colwall Post Office has been re-opened by Nigel and Sara Morris after being closed for a year.

The couple are sub-postmasters at Great Malvern Post Office and were approached by Colwall parish council and residents.

Mr Morris said: “We have opened a new premises and offer a full counter service including car tax, postage, Euros and stationery and cards. It’s been really busy.”

The post office has opened in partnership with the parish council, which also has an office at the premises.
