AN Army Cadet from Credenhill has been named as one of the country’s top young first aiders.

Fourteen-year-old Robert Parkes, a cadet with the Leominster detachment, was recognised for his role in treating a man who was having a seizure in the centre of Hereford last year.

The Weobley High School pupil put his first aid training with the cadets into practice as he cleared people from the area and moved the casualty, who was also bleeding from his nose and mouth, into the recovery position.

He then arranged for friends to call the emergency services and, on their arrival, he gave them the information they needed to treat him.

“I was scared at first but I could see the man was in need of help and no-one wanted to help because of all the blood,”

said Robert.

“I remembered in my training to remain calm, and from then on I just did what we had been taught. I’m just glad I had the training with the cadets and I was able to put it to good use.”

Lt Ben Arrowsmith, of the Leominster detachment, said: “For such a young person to react in such a responsible way is a remarkable achievement.

I’m very proud of him as are the rest of the cadets.”

Robert is one of seven youngsters from across the country to be awarded the title of Young First Aider of the Year.

The awards were judged by the St John Ambulance awards committee.
