7 AN exhibition at All Saints Church, Hereford, features the paintings of Lorenzo Gavarini, who studied art in Italy and has lived in Herefordshire since 1994.
Visitors to All Saints can see his large depiction of the legendary abduction of the Sabine women by the bellicose men of newly founded Rome.
Traditionally depicted as meek victims of warring parties, he shows the women engaged in effective resistance exposing the foolish tactics of bullies and their destructive ambitions.
He was moved to paint Descent by the war in Afghanistan and offers an explanation alongside both works.
Upstairs in the cafe at All Saints is a series of landscapes inspired by Lorenzo’s walk to Santiago di Compostella.
The exhibition continues until October 5.
