HEREFORDSHIRE will be celebrated as the hub of British communications today as BT marks 30 years since its satellite station in Madley began transmissions.
Since 1978, when the first satellite dish was installed, operations have continued to grow and 65 are now used to deliver the world’s most important events around the world.
Grond breaking moments such as the fall of the Berlin Wall and more poignant ones, such as Princess Diana’s funeral, have all been transmitted via the station, which is now the largest in the UK.
Employees past and present, including seven who started when it opened and still work there today, will enjoy a guided tour of the station with current manager Nick Wood and BT chief executive Ian Livingston during a series of commemorative events taking place over a month.
Mr Wood said: “This anniversary is about looking to the future as well as celebrating with pride the communications achievements of the last 30 years.”
