Can you fill this gap? Knighton First Responders are looking for new members especially to cover day time and weekend shifts. All volunteers are given training by the Welsh Ambulance Service. TWO DAY ENDURO – The Central Wales Auto Club based in Knighton put on a two-day Enduro which for the first time ever included a round of the British Championship. More than 100 top riders from all over the UK competed in the two-day event. First in the fourth round of the British Championship was Simon Wakely from Dorchester but local riders, Ashley Wood and Lee Edmondson from Llandrindod Wells were not far behind taking fifth and sixth place. In the expert class David Brick from Knighton was the highest placed local rider finishing in fifth place and Mark Perrott from Leominster finished seventh. In the Veteran class (over 40s) Neil Williams from Brecon came fourth and Carl Davies from Knighton sixth. The Clubman class saw local riders David Lloyd-Jones from Caersws and Jonathon Evans from Rhayader taking first and second place, Ioan Jones from Llanidloes was eighth and Matthew Willey from Llandrindod Wells, 15th .
The clerk of the course was Mark Vaughan and the secretary was Marty Jones, both from Knighton. Chairman of the Central Wales Auto Club, David Vaughan, praised Mark and Marty and all the other young members of the club for working so hard to put on such a successful event. On behalf of the club David also thanked the Forestry Commission, landowners and Bensons for the use of their land, Powys County Council, Knighton Town Council, St John’s Ambulance, all the marshals and everyone else who supported or contributed in any way.
FAMILY RAISES CASH – Mother and daughter, Laura and Sue Williams, took part in the London Moon Walk, a night walk of 26 miles through the capital, and raised £1,600 for Breakthrough Cancer. Laura and her cousin Emma Lewis did the Race for Life in Hereford and raised £150. Doug Williams celebrated his 60th birthday with a party and his guests donated £215 instead of gifts, and Doug and his brother, Rob, held a charity golf day at Knighton Golf Club in memory of their parents, Geoff and Dot Williams, and raised £300. The money from the party and the charity golf day will be divided between Knighton First Responders, Wales Air Ambulance and Macmillan Cancer Support. In this year so far, the total amount raised by the family is £2,265.
FARMERS’ MARKET – Knighton farmers’ and craft market will take place on Saturday starting at 9.30am in Knighton Community Centre. There will be the usual selection of stalls selling a good range of products.
AS I SAW IT – Knighton photographer, David Bunyan, will be displaying the fourth exhibition of his work entitled ‘As I Saw It’ in Knighton Library from October 1 to 31. This time, some of his photographs are of local places including scenic views of Knighton and the surrounding area.
WHIST DRIVE – Knighton Lady Bowlers are holding their first whist drive of the season in the clubhouse on Thursday, October 2, starting at 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome.
AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL FUNDRAISING – This fundraising event in aid of Amnesty with the Corndon Singers will be a concert of words and music with poems by Tony Walton. It will be held on Thursday, October 9, at 7.30pm in the Methodist Church, Victoria Road, Knighton (signed books available for a donation to Amnesty). Hopefully, a solo violinist of repute will perform as well. Tickets cost £5 including coffee and biscuits available on the night or advance tickets can be bought from Tower House Gallery and the Bookshop, Knighton.
POST OFFICE – The new post office counter in Knighton is already built. Workmen built the counter last week near the entrance inside Tuffins supermarket. The manager of the supermarket, Neil Eldridge, said: “We hope to open later this year but an official date hasn’t been set yet as it depends how long it takes to train staff.”
PRIMARY SCHOOL HARVEST – Each class at Knighton Primary School had the chance to grow their own vegetables and flowers this year in large, raised planters which were built by parents. In the last few weeks the children have been picking their vegetables and flowers which include onions, carrots, sunflowers and celery.
GUIDES MAKE THEIR PROMISE – At the start of their 13th year, 1st Knighton Guides held a promise ceremony when seven girls received their trefoil promise badges. They were Charlotte Ball, Lucy Evans, Jodie Smith, Bethan Jones, Millie Cornes, Abbie Packham and Rhian Powell. Two Brownies, Laura Vickress and Amy Morris, joined the Guides by crossing over the Brownie River which flows from the magic Brownie Pool. Sue O’Rourke, leader, and June Jones, assistant leader, are due to finish next summer so the Guides are hoping to find new volunteer leaders during the year to take over the running of the unit.
