THIEVES who drove off in a Kington man’s van were never going to get very far – the vehicle is powered by electricity and only has a 40-mile range.
The Ford Fiesta van, which is charged using solar electricity at the Kington home of owner Gordon Coppock and has a top speed of 50mph, went missing last Thursday night.
It was found by police next morning between Sarnesfield and Kinnersley on the A4112.
Mr Coppock has exhibited the van at the Tour de Presteigne and used it to lobby Herefordshire Council to provide a charging point in the city.
“It’s capable of a maximum of 40 miles before an en-route recharge, but I’ll continue to develop it to increase this, since similar-sized DIY electric vehicles can get to 75mph,” he said.
“I must admit it’s not the immediate choice for a getaway vehicle, and I expect the people who stole it were surprised, although it is very reliable and quiet. My kids would like me to add ‘solar powered electric getaway car’ to the writing on the sides.”
