A GOOD turn out of members greeted speaker, Susan Russell, at the September meeting for her talk on “Perfume in the Garden”. Not only did Mrs Russell give a very interesting talk but also followed with beautiful slides of gardens, large and small, full of scented plants. This was a lovely reminder of what our summer should have been instead of the miserable weather we had been experiencing. She also pointed out that our sense of smell is the most powerful of our emotions and that everybody’s is different. She had provided a wide selection of scented leaves as a quiz for the members to note whether they found them pleasant or otherwise and it was interesting to see just how one scent could provoke such a wide range of reactions.

The talk at the next meeting on Saturday, October 4, at 2pm to be held at Bishopswood Village Hall is entitled “Gardens in the Desert” by Cath Barton, which in view of the last few months’ weather is perhaps not entirely appropriate but no doubt when the speaker was booked we were expecting the hot dry summer as promised by the weathermen.

The November meeting will feature Jerry Green and the “History of Vegetable Growing” and not as mistakenly stated Nick Hamilton on “Barnsdale, The Television Years”. This has been moved to the December meeting which is also the AGM and Christmas lunch and that should be an incentive to join us in welcoming Nick Hamilton who is currently the President of the National Cottage Society.
