ORGANISERS of a much-loved annual event in Kington are banking on fine weather and a good turn-out this year after it almost went under with three inches of floodwater in 2008.
Kington Vintage Club is calling for support on the day and at various fundraisers beforehand to make sure the club’s 2009 show goes with a swing after it had to be cancelled in its 20th year and funds dropped to below zero.
Chairman Mick Rand said the disaster put club members at an all-time low and said: “I had a long chat with the bank manager but thank goodness our traders rallied round.”
Now those behind the Recreation Ground event, which regularly attracts more than 4,000 visitors from around the UK, are fast working their way towards a £5,000 target that will see it return and traders who waived refunds last year rewarded for their support.
“Because the traders stood by us we decided not to give in and unanimously agreed to continue with our show,” Mr Rand said, “Our members rallied around and began serious fundraising, and we have already held several very useful events.”
Now, with the pot half-full and more fundraisers including a performance from Swansea’s Dunvant Male Voice Choir planned, the club needs locals to help with one final push before the show itself takes place on August 15 and 16.
Dunvant choir are due to appear outdoors at Kington Football Club on Saturday June 6 with tickets available in advance from Kington FC, Tom Bounds Electrical, Marches Credit Union Shop and most vintage club members.
