PAPPY’S Fun Club, a comedy quartet whose show was described by the Independent on Sunday as “inspired absurdism” and by The Times as “a lot of old nonsense” arrives in the region this month, performing their unique show at The Globe in Hay on April 16 and at Theatr Brycheiniog the following night, April 17.

Pappy’s Fun Club is Ben Clark, Brendan Dodds, Matthew Crosby and Tom Parry. In 2006, having begun to build a cult following, they took their debut hour of fun to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and haven’t looked back.

In the current show, mysterious benefactor Pappy has set the boys the challenge of making the show more environmentally friendly and they respond by attempting to harness the power of fun with their funergy device.

“The problem people often have with what we do is that we seem to be four blokes mucking about on stage, but it takes a lot of intelligence to look so stupid,” says Matthew.

“A lot of what we do is making fun of each other’s quirks. Very occasionally we’ll find ourselves doing something that makes us all laugh hysterically but leaves the audience completely baffled.”

One thing you won’t find at Pappy’s Fun Club is satire or politics: Matthew says: “We don’t really have a political agenda. The environment is a fairly safe bet. It’s not a bold satirical point we’re making. Plenty of people do politics and satire incredibly well, but I don’t think we have the knowledge or the ability to do that. We just muck about and make people laugh.”

Pappy’s Fun Club are at The Globe (01497 821762) on Thursday, April 16 and at Theatr Brycheiniog (01874 611622) on Friday, April 17.
