THE Hereford Branch of the National Council of Women held an inter-generational seminar in the Town Hall, Hereford. Members were joined by sixth form girls from schools in Hereford, Monmouth, Malvern and Worcester to listen to speakers and discuss their futures in the workplace, society and family.
The seminar was opened by Lady Darnley, Lord Lieutenant of Herefordshire, who spoke of the changing roles of women and related this to her own life experiences. The first speaker was Monica Hall, past president of NCW. Her theme was that legislation and some changing attitudes have helped to make varied choices available to women and girls.
Other speakers were Chief Insp Sue Thomas, of West Mercia Police, and Helen Thomas, managing director of Westons Cider. Their themes were the changing roles of women in the police force, a traditionally male-dominated workplace, and also the particular challenges of a family business.
The girls were given questions by all the speakers for discussions in groups. The sixth formers were articulate in giving confident responses. This was a well-structured, thought-provoking day and the girls went away with much of interest to take back to their peers.
