THE trial of a Portuguese lorry driver charged with causing the death of a farmer is under way at Hereford Crown Court.

The hearing into a fatal road collision which claimed the life of 68-year-old Denis Gibbons, from Putley, began on Monday.

Jose Tito Ferreira Cardoso, aged 50, was remanded in custody after the incident, which happened on the A438 near Tarrington last September, and faces one charge of causing death by dangerous driving, which he denies.

Deputy Circuit Judge Michael Mott and a jury heard evidence from motorist Eunice Ingleby and her husband Eric, who both witnessed the collision.

Mr Gibbons’ widow Jean described him as a “generous and loving man” following his death and paid tribute to his great sense of humour.

The father-of-two was pronounced dead at the scene after his Land Rover Defender was in collision with an articulated lorry driven by Cardoso.

The trial is expected to finish tomorrow (Friday).
