KNIGHTON HISTORIC VEHICLE CLUB – The 10th anniversary celebration of the Knighton Historic Vehicle Club took place at the weekend, when members held a classic weekend run. The club was formed in April 1999 and the first meeting took place at the Knighton Hotel. The club is now a very successful small vehicle club based in mid-Wales. It has an excellent website and a newsletter, which keeps its 65 members informed of what is going on. The club holds about 25 events per year, including classic car tours on the continent and in the UK. Club stands are one of the attractions at classic car shows and members take part in parades at Knighton and Clun carnivals. Members hold their own classic car evening annually to raise funds for the Air Ambulance and the Severn Hospice. For further information about the club, contact Derek Holloway on 01547 528717.
VINTAGE SPORTS CAR CLUB – Local members of the Vintage Sports Car Club set off on a 70-mile road run as part of National Drive It Day on Sunday. Fifteen cars went on the journey, taking them to Llanbister, Abbey-Cwm-Hir, then on to Hundred House for lunch and then afternoon tea at a member’s house in Rhoscoch. The local organisers were Stuart and Lyn Pettifer from Llangunllo.
BENCH COLLAPSE – A bench described as very welcome and well used on Panpwnton Hill has collapsed. On Bank Holiday Monday, May 4, weather permitting, a group of people will be having a fund-raising tea stall at the site of the bench on Offa’s Dyke Path, from 11am to 4pm, to raise money for a replacement. For further information, contact Tom Taylor on 01547 520096.
Coffee Morning – There will be a coffee morning at Knighton Methodist Church on Tuesday, May 5, from 10am till 11.30am.
PACT MEETINGS – The next PACT (Partnerships And Communities Together) meeting for the communities of Knucklas, Beguildy, Felindre and Llangunllo will be held at Knucklas Community Centre at 7pm on Tuesday, May 5. The purpose of these meetings is to afford the community an opportunity to have some input into what the police do in and around their area. The next Knighton PACT meeting is to be held in the Church Hall, St Edwards Street, Knighton, on Thursday, May 7. At the last meeting, local residents identified one priority, which was the continued problem posed by large numbers of youngsters going around the town acting in an anti-social manner. It is hoped that now many of the parents of those children involved have been spoken to and that this problem will have lessened.
NORTON VANDALISM – Between 1.45am and 4am on Saturday, a group of at least 10 young people went on a trail of destruction through the small village of Norton, near Presteigne. Privately owned gardens were entered and solar powered garden lights were broken and thrown around; a large ‘For Sale’ sign was uprooted and moved; cottage signposts were ripped up; and a number of large orange cones placed around road works for public safety were removed.
Although house-to-house inquiries have now been conducted, anyone who saw these events and who may be able to identify those involved, is asked to contact PC Cowan at Knighton police station. Police can now be called for non-emergencies using the new number 101 and local officers can be contacted using the e-mail address knightonnpt@dyfed-powys.pnn.police.uk FRIENDS OF THE COMMUNITY CENTRE – May will be a very busy month in Knighton!

The May Fair comes to town and is in the car park in front of the community centre from May 15-17. On Saturday, May 16, the Knighton Carnival Committee will hold a fund-raising May Fair dance with the ever-popular Chris Branford doing the disco. This will be the evening when Knighton‘s carnival princess will be chosen. The community centre is being used for a wedding on May 23. On May 30, there will be an exciting live music event, The Big Bash, arranged by Ben Lovell. Groups will include Fight the Bear and The Ride, both popular Knighton groups. The event will be from 2pm to 2am. Under-16s will be allowed entry until 8pm only if accompanied by a responsible adult over 21. The evening part of the event is 16+. Please help pass the word to the 16 to 18-year-old audience that we must have photo IDs for entry into music events. It is normal practice in big venues. Let them know it is so cool to have proper ID – it means we do seriously OK events in the community centre.
KNIGHTON PRIMARY SCHOOL – Junior councillors at Knighton Primary School have raised concerns about broken glass and dog mess in the sand park by the Offa’s Dyke Centre. Recently, a young child was cut by a piece of glass in the sand at the park. Councillors also discussed their concerns over the fact that youths are often seen drinking alcohol in the sand park or down by the river. The Junior Council decided that if the police walked in the area the problem would go away.
