A PROMISING young golfer from Cornwall died after leaving a Herefordshire road and colliding with a trailer.
Ben Enoch, from Truro in Cornwall, died following the accident last Thursday (April 30) on the A40 at Whitchurch.
The 19-year-old was understood to be travelling to a golf tournament in Lancashire when his Peugeot 306 left the road just before the Symonds Yat turn-off.
Mr Enoch was a was a runner-up in the Welsh Amateur Championship and his brother Rhys is in the squad to face America in September.
Pete Butcher, police press officer, said the 19-year-old’s green 306 Peugeot motor car left the road while negotiating a sweeping left-hand curve.
“The vehicle travelled through a fence on to private property and collided with a lorry trailer being used as a storage unit.
The driver sustained fatal injuries in the crash. No other vehicle was involved,” said Mr Butcher.
The eastbound carriageway was closed between the Dixton roundabout at Monmouth and the Symonds Yat exit at Whitchurch, which required long diversions to be set up. The incident caused considerable delays for drivers on the eastbound A40. The carriageway was closed for four hours whilst police collision investigators examined the scene.
All the emergency services including the air ambulance attended. The coroner has been informed and an inquest is expected to be opened and adjourned this week. Police want to speak to anyone who saw the collision and anyone with information can contact PC Dean Smith on 0300 333 3000.
