PLANS are under way to build a stateof- the-art sports hall on the site of a specialist Hereford school.

A feasibility study has been set up to establish residents’ views on the planned development at Brookfield School on Grandstand Road.

Should the plan go ahead, it will house multi-purpose indoor sports facilities to be used by the school’s pupils and the surrounding community.

It could cost between £1 million and £2 million.

“The idea originated from our successful specialist school status application,”

said Brookfield deputy headteacher Phil Abell.

“We hope it will enhance the school’s curriculum as well as providing something for the community.”

The hall will provide a space for pupils’ leisure activities and drama and theatre workshops, as the current hall doubles up as a breakfast room and classroom.

Mr Abell said he envisaged the hall would be open to the public at evenings and weekends.

“We would like some input on what people would like to be able to use the facility for,” he said.

“This may be anything from badminton clubs to youth groups.

“We would also like to see the facility used by other schools to extend their curriculum.”

The planned site currently houses a car park and playground, with the latter set to be moved.

Jonathan Carney, of consultants Strategic Leisure, appointed by the school to carry out the feasibility study, said letters had been sent to residents along Grandstand Road detailing the plans. A workshop will also be held at a future date.

Brookfield School provides education for about 60 pupils aged between five and 16 who have emotional, behavioural or social difficulties.
