A HOST of Herefordshire students are set to be presented with Duke of Edinburgh certificates, having completed the award’s expedition section.
The 25 youngsters from Hereford Sixth Form College walked 50 miles in four days across the Cambrian Mountains, mid-Wales, as part of the gold award.
This was done while carrying clothes, tents, camping equipment and food. Weeks of preparation included map reading, navigation, outdoor cooking and first aid.
Before completing the whole award, entrants have to take on periods of public service, learn a new skill and take part in a five-day residential project.
■ Meanwhile, a former Lady Hawkins School pupil has completed the gold award.
Darryn Edwards, aged 20, completed the expedition part of the award during a four-day 50 mile hike in the Elan Valley, mid-Wales.
He also trained other Duke of Edinburgh award students as part of the community section.
Darryn, whose family home is in Talgarth, near Brecon, is currently studying sport and exercise science at Aberystwyth University.
