A HEREFORD church group providing homeless people with meals and hot drinks has been given a grant to continue its work.

The soup kitchen, run by members of the Hope City Church on Gaol Street, has been given £1,500 by Hereford City Council.

It regularly attracts up to 40 people, who include the homeless and migrant workers, to its open door evenings at the church every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evening.

Church elder Raymond Rowe said: “We’re very grateful to the city council for the grant, which will allow us to continue providing the service.

“There is no charge at all and we regularly welcome between 25 and 40 people – much more than when we first started just over a year ago.”

The funding has come from a city council grants scheme, the grants working party, totalling £20,000 a year, which it uses to help out organisations within the city.

“The group involved provides a muchneeded service to the less fortunate within our community,” said Councillor Julie Woodward, vice-chairman.

The soup kitchen is open Monday to Wednesday evenings between 8pm and 9.30pm.
