SOPHISTICATED, easy-listening interpretations of standard melodies by Gershwin, Kern, Porter, Joplin and Lennon and McCartney will fill St Nicholas Church in Grosmont on Saturday, May 30, when jazz pianist Dave Price leads his quartet – plus special guest trumpeter Chris Hodgkins – in an evening of Jazz in the Nave. Making up the quartet are Lee Goodall on alto Erika Lyons on double bass and Roger Powell on drums.
Lee Goodall’s CV includes two years touring in Van Morrison’s band, while Erika has recorded, broadcast and performed with top British and international jazz musicians.
Roger Powell, too, has gigged with a roll call of great British players including Digby Fairweather, Don Lusher and Danny Moss.
Guest trumpeter Chris Hodgkins is well known on the Welsh jazz scene.
He was a co-founder in 1974 of the Welsh Jazz Festival and, four years later, was instrumental in establishing the Welsh Jazz Society.
In 2002, he was awarded BBC Radio 3’s prestigious services to jazz award for his long-standing work there.
The Jazz in the Nave event starts at 7.30pm.
